+++ Celebrate! Praise! The Maryland Baptist Church, St. Joseph, Louisiana, is a small church (82 residents) with a big heart. This warm-hearted, generous congregation sent a $2,500.00 gift to assist FBC, Chalmette, rebuild its facilities. Thank you, Kingdom-Minded Saints from the Delta Baptist Association for your generosity and concern for God's Kingdom in St. Bernard parish.
+++ Celebrate! Praise! The Adopt-a-Church program is a coordinated effort between the North American Mission Board (NAMB) and Louisiana Baptist Convention (LBC) that exists to assist Southern Baptist Churches (SBC) that have been adversely affected due to disaster. This program allows churches across the to enter into partnership with affected churches in order to give support that will help re-establish their ministry. These churches agree to provide people, material and financial resources to
+++ Celebrate! Praise! Before the Adopt-a-Church program even began, pastor Bill Hild, FBC, Sarasota, and his congregation contacted our pastor. On the Sunday of Katrina, while our smaller than normal congregation sang, "Because He lives, I can face tomorrow" -- pastor Hild was showing his congregation a satellite photo of FBC, Chalmette, and challenging his congregation to Adopt-The-Pastor of FBC, Chalmette. And, they did just that. Since October 1, FBC,

Prayer Requests
Thelma Smith recently suffered the death of her daughter. Please keep Thelma and her family in your prayers. Lynda Osbourne has requested that the church family pray for her cousin Jeanette, who is gravely ill. Charmaine Holden shared that Clayton's co- worker Jeff is still in need of prayers. Charmaine also shared that Ruby Deffes, her mom, has an appointment with a cancer doctor on June 6. A recent skin graph was not successful. The sister of Becky Primm, our former church custodian, passed away recently… and, Nicky, Becky’s son, fell down recently and broke his arm. Horace and Dora Charrier also need our prayers. Dora must use a walker to get around and Horace has even greater difficulty walking. Finally, pray for all of our displaced people, whether they return to St. Bernard parish or not. For many, the reality and pain of our extended separation is more than can be handled. Remember, we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us. We’re not home yet, children!

Mrs. Edna Pope Rabalais has requested prayer for her daughter-in-law, Bethann. Bethann has been diagnosed with cancer and, in addition to praying for her physical healing, do pray for her spiritual healing. Pray for her salvation. /// Polly Duhe' shares that Lenny's sister-in-law, Lanny, in Evansville, IN had breast cancer in Febuary '05. Surgery removed the cancer, but chemo treatments weakened her considerably. Lanny developed pneumonia and was in the hospital for two months, beginning two days after Christmas. Polly recently learned that Lanny is once again taking radiation due to cancer being discovered in her bones. Do pray for Lanny and for her family. /// My information is limited, but, I've received word, indirectly, that Beth Nunes also has cancer. If you have any information, email me so that I and others can know how to pray for her.

Funerals
Jean Mandola went home to be with Jesus early this morning. Funeral arrangements have not as yet been made. Do pray for John and his family. As soon as we have the necessary information concerning funeral arrangments, we will send another email with that information. You can reach John at 504-432-5368 and their daughter, Cheryl, can be reached at 985-960-6189.
Kenneth (last name unknown), Laura Lawrenson's brother, also passed away earlier this past week. A memorial service will be held at Lakelawn funeral home in Metarie on Saturday, April 29, 2006. At this time we haven't any information concerning a time for this service. As soon as we have the necessary information concerning funeral arrangments, we will send another email with that information.

Updates
We will have a Special Business Meeting following the Worship Service on Sunday, April 30, 2006. At this time we will present the design and floor plans for the new First Baptist Church, Chalmette. We will also share information regarding new funding sources that we are anticipating will help us complete the project.
We are still struggling to obtain member information (name, address, telephone numbers, etc.) on our church members. As you are aware, we lost all of our computers and all of our data concerning church members. We have tried every option available to locate church members, with little success. At some point in the not so distant future we will be forced to use the post office to assist us in obtaining addresses. We have tried to avoid using this option because it is terribly costly. At this moment we have approximately 2,500 unidentified church members. We have their names and their old mailing addresses, based on our last Chuch Directory, but nothing beyond that. We have avoided using the postal service because it will cost us approximately $1 per person to obtain new mailing addresses. This type of financial outlay would be better utlized on our reconstruction project. So, we are again asking for your assistance. Our web site, www.fbcchalmette.org has a list of the few members that we have located. If you have information, even if it is simply a telelphone number, of any of our church members, do email that to me FBC-Chalmette@charter.net or Carol Saling csm5520@aol.com

An Important Update
This coming Wednesday Genny and I will head up to
1. URGENT! I need photographs of various ministries of our church, pre-Katrina. It can be photographs of people involved in ministry, doing ministry, etc.… but, no photos of people simply standing around. Also, please label each photograph. Describe the ministry, who is doing what, etc. PLEASE DO NOT ASSUME THAT EVERYONE’S SENDNG ME PHOTOS…. MOST WERE LOST re: Katrina. I will not be able to return your photograph.
2. URGENT! I also need photographs of our church, showing the damage to the church from Katrina. Please provide clear photographs, as they will be reprinted in a promotional flyer for our church that will cover several states.
Now, stay with me as I explain, as best as I can, what is transpiring. As you are aware we will have a Special Business Meeting following the Worship Service on

2. I traveled to
a) The LBC wants to place their endorsement on all materials developed by Bill Montgomery. (I believe Bill will have an endorsement from the Florida Baptist Convention and I believe that I can get similar endorsements from the Missouri Baptist Convention as well, and possibly the Texas Baptist Convention – pray about this for me, for us, for our church!)
b) The LBC is involved with a new program in the metro-New
c) I was also assured that our church would be one of two churches promoted by the LBC as major projects…. The LBC is involved with re-building projects for many, many churches. If I understand correctly, our church and a sister church of similar size are the two largest projects… thus we will be one of two major projects.
d) The LBC will be assigning their contractor to work with our architects to do our project. The LBC contractor will live on our church site until the project is completed. We are attempting to schedule a meeting between our architects, LBC leaders, and the LBC contractor, on the Monday or Tuesday following our Special Business Meeting following the Worship Service on
e) Also, as some of you may be aware, the Missouri Baptist Convention has adopted the Southern Baptist churches and missions of St. Bernard parish. At this juncture, their initial goal was to work on
There is more, much more that I wish I could share, but, this email should suffice to explain why we need photographs, urgently, in a timely fashion – and this email should also bring you up-to-date on what we have been working on in an effort to rebuild our church.

What follows is an update from Mark Umberhagen: Mamma Rose: ".....is continuing to make progress. It is slow but we are seeing positive movement. She is no longer on the vent and off of the T bar for breathing. Sill on Oxygen and is breathing with a trek collar. The other day with some help but not much she was able to pull herself up in bed and turn to sit along side of it for 12.5 minutes. Yesterday she stood up for the first time since January with the assistance of two therapist and a walker. It wasn't for long and it was not pretty but it happen. In addition they are going to allow her to speak again with the speaking valve. I am glad because it is so hard reading lips and when Mom has something she has to say she is going to say it until you understand it.At this point I believe she is no longer able to go to Select Hospital because Praise The Lord she is off the vent. She is still in the IMC Unit at Ft. Sanders, Room 7, 865-541-3278 and will be there until the insurance says she needs to be moved. Which I believe will not be to much longer." Do continue to pray for Mamma Rose, Pappa Moe, and for their family. This has been a very, very long, protracted illness and they very much need to be undergirded by your prayer.
First Baptist Church, Chalmette, meets each Sunday, 10:30 a.m. in the Cafeteria of Chalmette High School!
There he sat! A Lost Man! Lost as the day is long! He is a prominent, yet unsaved, leader in St. Bernard parish! He was busy! I was busy! Post-Katrina business! Quickly, he moved here, then there, busy in the parish goverment complex office. He needed something done. So did I. As we both moved about, talking to this one, then to that one, waiting here, waiting there, completing forms, doing paperwork -- he suddenly stopped, looked at me, actually stared for a moment, then spoke with a loud voice, filling the government complex office: "I know you! Your Jeffries! First Baptist, Chalmette! Never been to your church, but I know this, you had a great church!" It was a sweet compliment, but, one word gripped my spirit: "had" "You HAD a great church!" I shook his hand, said thanks, then told him something some of you have heard me say on more than one occasion: "Yes! a Great Church! But, We Will Return! We Will Rebuild! We Will Remain! And, We Will Be A Part Of The Restoration, Especially The Restoration Of The Spiritual Infracture Of St. Bernard Parish!" He smiled! Then, left very quickly -- evidently more business needing his attention. Just before he left, however, he looked my way one final time and said, "Pastor, I don't go to church, but when you get the church back up and running, I'm going to come!" As I drove away from St. Bernard parish, the Spirit of God led me to recall something that I had said many, many times when I began my ministry at First Baptist Church, Chalmette, nearly sixteen years ago: "We may not be able to have everyone in St. Bernard parish attend our church; but, one of our goals is to have those who do not attend church to say, "I do not go to church, but, if I did, that would be the church I'd go to!"' Evidently we succeeded with that man! May our Jesus enable us to succeed further in bringing him into the Kingdom...And may he enable us to succeed and to succeed yet again with all who already have and all who will return to St. Bernard parish!
Keep Running The Race!

No. 02
Hello Everyone --
I've had difficulty with my email system, so, I've been unable to communicate via email....so, let's get up to date...
Important: The Senior Adult Building is now being used for storage. It has taken several of our men and a couple of dozen volunteers to completely re-organize the items that were being stored in this building. We're in the process of installing a washer and dryer for people planning on working "sleep overs." One room was set aside specifically for "sleep overs" for people needing a place to stay as they assisted us in getting the church up and running. That room has inadvertedly been filled with items that someone wanted to save. We do want to store whatever anyone feels needs to be stored and saved, however, we cannot simply store "stuff" without order or a plan...and, we must follow the plan that is in place. This is our only storage building, and we must use it wisely. So, please, if you are planning on coming to the church to attempt to "save" and "store" anything, it is important that you contact one of the following people beforehand: Mike "Slim" Gillette @ 225-485-0508 or Lewis Albarado @ 504-201-5886. These men and others are now in the process of re-organizing everything that was moved and clearing the "sleep over" room for future "sleep overs." We're also in the process of setting up a temporary church office in this building as well. Space is a premium, so, do assist us. We cannot save and store everything. Some items that have been placed in this building may be removed, dependent upon need and availability of space.
First Baptist Church, Chalmette, has weekly worship services in the cafeteria of Chalmette High School each Sunday at 10:30 a.m.
We will celebrate the Lord's Supper during our Easter Service. Hope You Can Attend!
Mamma Rose is still in need of our prayer... for her continued improvement, and, for God to open a door for her to be able to be transferred to a specific hospital that is, unfortunately, out of the network serviced by her insurance company. Insurance companies can be difficult to deal with, but, with prayer nothing is impossible.
On a different front, what follows are a couple of lines from an up-date from Mark Umberhagen, son of Mamma Rose and Pappa Moe. (Mark is a pastor in Tennessee where Mamma Rose is hospitalized). Here's a few words from Mark to his church family and friends:
I want to encourage you to remember the big job that we have on our hands. Whether you are still a member or whether you now consider yourself a former member, FBC, Chalmette, still needs your prayer and financial support. Hopefully, within the next several weeks we will be able to present the architect's plans for the new First Baptist Church, Chalmette, to those who are able to attend the special presentation meeting. For the new First Baptist Church, Chalmette, to be built, however, we will need your help. Even if you have united with another church, we will need your help. Please, do not forget about FBC, Chalmette, in her hour of greatest need. Pray about what Jesus would have you do.
In the midst of the post-Katrina recovery it is important for our members and friends to be faithful financially. If you are planning on mailing your tithe or financial gift, please mail it to…..

P. O. Box 311
Alexandria, LA 71309
Write on your check: First Baptist Church, Chalmette -- Operating Fund or First Baptist Church, Chalmette - Building Fund.
At this point, excluding the contribution by Mark mentioned above, we have received approximately $31,000.00 in contributions to our new Building Fund. However, $25,000.00 of that total came from one church in Texas. The pastor of that church, who had no connection to our church, read an article about our plight and drove eight straight hours to present me with the $25,000.00 check from his church. Know this, we will need more churches like this generous church to assist us if we are to survive this crisis. (Before Katrina there were 138 churches and missions in the Baptist Association of Greater New Orleans. At this moment 59 are up and running 72 are not functioning and 7 are "on the bubble" -- meaning that they may or may not survive. FBC, Chalmette, is one of the 7 "on the bubble" This cannot happen! It will not happen!)
As I've been sharing every now and then via email, even as we gain support from our sister churches across the U.S. we will still need the prayer and financial support of present and former members of FBC, Chalmette, as well. Pray about that, please. Pray about what Jesus would have you do. Is there something that Jesus wants you to do in response to the challenge that is before us? Is there something that the church you are attending can do to help? The pastor who donated the above mentioned $25,000.00 gift shared that he simply read of our plight in a Baptist newspaper and "the Holy Spirit" jumped all over him. If the pastor of the church you are attending does not know of our situation, or only has a casual knowledge of our plight, then, he does not have the opportunity to respond to the prompting of the Holy Spirit. Again, pray about what Jesus would have you do. People and churches with no connection whatsover to FBC, Chalmette, are coming to our aid... what about those people and churches that are out there that have some connection because you are sitting in their congregation. The very first contribution we received was for $79.00 from a little country church in Missouri. Whether is $25,000.00 from a city church, or $79.00 from a country church, or $2,800.00 from a youth associational rally, these people are our friends, our faithful friends. Thank Jesus for Faithful Friends!
Finally, and this portion of this email message may be just for you. If so, the Holy Spirit will reveal to you that it was intended for you. I did a "google" search for "church hurricane reconstruction grants" and "church reconstruction grants" There are several millions sites listed that indicate that they are issuing these types of grants. However, it is a very time consuming process to discover how a church may apply for such a grant with the organizations listed. I'm hoping that we can have several people "surf" as many of these links as possible so that we can apply for financial assistance. If you feel that this is something that you can do, email me or telephone me at 504-715-1479. I'd like to form a lay ministry team of people who have the time to explore. We'll set up one central location for applying for these grants.

Listed below are several prayer requests....
Mamma Rose was rushed down to ICU at Ft. Sanders Hospital out of the Patricia Neal Unit where she was involved in rehabilitation. The Doctors suspect that she could have a blood clout in her lungs, which is very dangerous. Do keep Mamma Rose, Papa Moe, and their family in your prayers. I spoke with Papa Moe a couple of nights ago. He seemed to be handling all of this as best as he could. I'm quite confident that this latest turn has affected him deeply. Again, coat Mamma Rose and this family with prayer.
Loraine Camouch has been diagnosed with cancer and will be having a mascetomy this coming Friday.
Dr. Leon Hyatt is not a member of our church, but known to many. Leon was the driving force behind the conservative resurgence among Baptist denominational life in Louisiana. Leon will be having surgery at the end of this month for two growths...one is on his thyroid gland...the other, I believe, may be on his voice box. Its amazing to me how much of an influence this one man has had for Christ within our Louisiana Baptist Convention.
Genny will have her last rehabilitation meeting this coming Monday. She is progressing well and her physician indicated that she can anticipate continued improvement for as long as two years after her surgery. She is doing well, very well...and everyone who encounters Genny regards her as a miracle. Keep her in your prayers.

FBC, Chalmette, along with a couple of our sister Baptist churches in St. Bernard parish meet every Sunday at 10:30 a.m. in the cafeteria of Chalmette High School on Judge Perez and Palmisanno. Our attendance, of course, fluctuates between 150-300 people. We have many of our FBC, Chalmette, people who attend, and many visitors. This last Sunday, Heath Allen, Fred Billiot and Clair McCain, led us in music. Heath has been playing his guitar for the past several weeks. The service usually ends around noon...amazing....a worship service that last at hour and a half that has two preachers.... that's right... two preachers....two sermons....and, seems like everyone is as happy as can be.... we had something special...we're in the process of reclaiming it, rebuilding it, reviving it....and, with His grace and strength we will succeed. Keep us in your prayers.
We're still dealing with architects in the development of the new FBC, Chalmette, and we're talking with pastor's and denominational leaders across the country seeking financial assistance in raising funds to rebuild FBC, Chalmette. I'm very confident that Jesus will enable us to put the pieces together so that we can complete the project. I'm working diligently on fund-raising for FBC, Chalmette's reconstruction. Pray for our success.
